This is the final test of a gentleman; His respect for those who can be of no possible service to him. --- William Lyon Phelps.

Dear Lord, may I seek to serve others, not to use them; to inspire them, not to exploit them.

Johnson well says, "He who waits to do a great deal of good at once will never do anything." Life is made up of little things. It is very rarely that an occasion is offered for doing a great deal at once. True greatness consists in being great in little things. --- C. Simmons.

"His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord." Matthew 25:23.

Four things come not back:

The spoken word;
The sped arrow;
Time past;
The neglected opportunity.

"As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith." Galatians 6:10.

Righteousness is the fulfillment of God's creative purpose in a man's whole life. It begins with the soul, the real eternal self, that is instinct with life of the God from whom it came. It is the response of the highest in man to the claim of God. ---Percy C. Ainsworth.

"In the way of righteousness is life: and in the pathway thereof there is no death." Proverbs 12:28.

It is with men as with wheat; the light heads are erect even in the presence of the Omnipotent, but the full heads bow in reverence before Him. ---- Richard Joseph Cooke.

"I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name." Psalm 138:2.

Ask Him to increase your powers of sympathy: to give more quickness and depth of sympathy, in little things as well as great. Opportunities for doing a kindness are often lost from mere want of thought. Think of the pleasure you might give someone who is shut up, and who has fewer pleasures than you have, by sharing with her some little comfort or enjoyment that you have learned to look upon as a necessity of life. ---- George Howard Wilkinson. wii

False friends are like our shadow, keeping close to us when we walk in sunshine, but leaving us the instant we cross in to shade. ---- Bovee.

"Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour." Proverbs 19:4.

TRUST...

Build a little fence of trust
Around today;
Fill each space with loving work
And therein stay;
Look not through the sheltering bars
Upon tomorrow,
God will help thee bear what comes,
Of joy or sorrow.
---- Mary Frances Butts.

Some would find fault with the morning sky, if they ever got up early enough. The fault-finder will find faults even in Paradise. ---- Henry David Thoreau.

"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." Philippians 4:8.

There is only one way to get ready for immortality, and that is to love this life and live it as bravely and faithfully, and cheerfully as we can. ---- Henry Van Dyke.

"Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality." 1 Corinthians 15:50, 53.

God has a purpose for my life.
No other person can take my place.
It isn't a big place to be sure,
but for years I have been molded in a peculiar way to fill a peculiar niche in the world's work.
---- Charles Stelzle.

"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven." Ecclesiastes 3:1.

Nothing we can say to the Lord, no calling him by great or dear names, can take the place of the plain doing of His will. We may cry out about the beauty of eating bread with Him in His kingdom, but it is wasted breath and rootless hope, unless we plow and plant in His kingdom here and now. To remember Him at His table and to forget Him at ours, is to have invested in bad securities. There is no substitute for plain, everyday goodness. ---- Maltbie Davenport Babcock.

When love and skill work together expect a masterpiece. ----John Ruskin.

"For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God." Hebrews 3:4.

There is no happiness which hope cannot promise,
no difficulty which it cannot surmount,
no grief which it cannot mitigate.

It is the wealth of the indigent,
the health of the sick,
the freedom of the captives,
the rest of the toiler.
---- Theodore Cuyler.

"And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us." Romans 5:5.

And hope does not disappoint us.

We all have to learn, in one way or another, that neither men or boys get second chances in this world. We all get new chances until the end of our lives, but not second chances in the same set of circumstances. ---- Thomas Hushes.

"For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day." 2 Corinthians 4:16.

Never be afraid of giving up your best, and God will give you His better. --- James Hinton.

"Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again." Luke 6:38.

MAN-MAKING

We are all blind until we see
That in the human plan
Nothing is worth the making if
It does not make the man.
Why build these cities glorious
If man unbuilded goes?
In vain we build the world, unless
The builder also grows.

--- Edwin Markham.

No man can be without his god.
If he have not the true God to bless and sustain him, he will have some false god to delude and to betray him. --- Richard Chenevix Trench.

Goodness is the only investment that never fails. ---- Henry David Thoreau.
