The success stories of Reader and Imagine are inspiring. I encourage us all to think about our diet and the exercise we do and ask that we encourage each other with posts here. Even failures can say what we should not do and mayby I can at least help there.

Tonight and tommorow will be examples of eating too much of the wrong kinds of foods for me but I plan starting day after tommorow to limit myself to no more than 2500 calories per day and to walk at least thirty minutes per day. Heavy as I am now I should lose about a pound and a half a week with that regimen. Will keep you posted on my progress. I wish all who want to lose weight or just eat more nutritious food and exercise more success.

I'll wait until next year to get started. I bought too many chocolate covered pretzels last night to start now. Laughing

I shall have to wait until next year also to begin. Must get through the Twilight Zone Marathon next weekend with plenty of not-good-for-you snacks.

This is a GREAT idea, listener! Your mind never ceases to amaze me, 'specially at yo' age, lol. Razz

Well, I hope to keep my calories way down, not over 1500, lower if possible. Not much into the exercise - not that I don't think I could walk (my choice of exercise) again, but it's simply not safe anymore. Mad

I hope to keep going, as I've already started eating less, and NO plans for big meals for the next couple of days. Smile

I'm not a muncher, so no problemo there either. Wish the weight would just melt off, but at 65, doubt it seriously. Sad

I'll be praying for each of you and ask that you return the favour. Prayer works! Wink

Help Me Lyrics

(Words & music by Larry Gatlin)

Lord, Help me walk
another mile, just one more mile;
I'm tired of walkin' all alone.

Lord, Help me smile
another smile, just one more smile;
You know I just can't make it on my own.

I never thought I needed help before;
I thought that I could get by - by myself.
Now I know I just can't take it any more.
With a humble heart, on bended knee,
I'm beggin' You, please, Help Me.

Come down from Your golden
throne to me, to lowly me;
I need to feel the touch of Your tender hand.

Remove the chains of darkness
let me see, Lord let me see;
Just where I fit into your master plan.

I never thought I needed help before;
I thought that I could get by - by myself.
Now I know I just can't take it any more.
With a humble heart, on bended knee,
I'm beggin' You, please, Help Me.

I'm not really counting calories to try and stay under a certain limit per day because trying to keep up with all that would just tend to make my head hurt. I'm just trying to eat, in moderation, the foods that I know are not too high in calories or fat. I figure most days I'm around 1,500 to 2,000 calories, some days more, some less. When I started, the Dr. gave me a food diary and told me to write down each and everything, including the quantities. that I ate each meal. After a couple of visits that I "forgot to bring it with me", I finally fessed up that I wasn't keeping it up. I told the Dr. that, "hey, it's working isn't it?". If I have to keep a record of everything like that, it would just make me think more about how much less I am eating now than I used to.

Just cutting out sugar, flour, starches, fatty meats, fried foods and soft drinks has been the major factors in losing what I have so far.So far, I have had pretty good success, but I notice it is coming off a little less each week. I lost 18 lbs. in the first 19 days, which quite a bit of that was fluid retention. If I can keep it to around a constant 1-1/2 lbs. per week, I figure that will make it easier to maintain once I get to where I want to be.

Good luck to everyone that is or will try to lose weight. Just keep this thought in mind, you didn't gain it quickly, so don't expect to lose it quickly.

Reader, over the years I have gone up and down and noticed as I lose it becomes harder and harder. As you probably know one reason is that as you weigh more it takes more calories to maintain the higher weight. As you lose weight it takes fewer calories to maintain weight so you have to eat fewer calories to lose weight than when you were at the higher weight requiring more calories for maintenance.

The first day of training in the gym in the Police Academy, I lost 6 pounds. We were to work out in the gym 2 days a week & run the other 3 days. Physical training was to last 8 weeks. I weighed 176 when we started, so I calculated that at the rate I was going I would weigh 80 pounds when physical training was over.

Wow, it makes me feel pretty good to know what I have done was a small bit of inspiration! Here's a quick synopsis of what has transpired. 13 years ago I weighed around 185-195, I am 5'10", will be 56 years old in 3 weeks Over the next decade I lost control, my metabolism changed, went through 2 divorces, a little depression, and so on. I shot up to 330 pounds at my biggest last spring. Had to have 2 stents put in 7 years ago, go on BP meds 2 years ago, and had a fear of becoming diabetic. Earlier this year it was time for a change. Went vegetarian except I still eat fish, eggs and some dairy. I cut out all sugar, white flour, red meat, pork, chicken, etc and drink nothing but water, coffee and the occasional scotch or beer. I eat 1600 - 1800 calories a day. There is a Biblical based program called the Daniel Fast that I go on every 3 or 4 months for a few weeks as a cleansing time.

Starting to exercise was tough even though I used to be very physical, I ran an outdoor adventure therapy program for 10 years, was a certified climbing and rappelling instructor and so on. I started with small hand weights last summer and a kettlebell. THen after a while started riding my bike and ride 6 miles now 4 nights a week. I couldnt do a half mile when I started. Down close to 260 now and feeling great. Now mind you because of my build and former physical lifestyle, I looked boney at 185. My goal is to lose down to 200. My dr is taking me off BP meds, I am already off heart meds. Cholesterol at check up 2 months ago was 140. Heart rate was 62.

My diet consists of fruits, veggies, fish(grilled, broiled and baked), shellfish, whole grains(bread, rice, pasta, etc), nuts, eggs, cheese, and soy products. I had to relearn how to cook, and that's been fun. I ran into someone a few weeks ago that had not seen me in a year and she literally did not recognize me until I started talking. That was nice LOL.

Thanks for posting! I had forgotten all about this song. I used to sing it back in the 1970's.

Chiller network has Outer limits marathon on this weekend! It's the old original ones too, not those from the 1990's. I love the Twilight Zone marathons!

Today is going to be day one for me on doing much better with diet and exercise and I am going to aim for meeting my calorie and exercise goals. The more you eat I have found the more you want to eat so cutting back from what I have been eating will be tough. If I want to eat something I know I should not I am going to imagine Granny with a shovel in her hand warning me to leave it off. If I still give in I will try to make up for my failure by running from the angry woman with a shovel. Laughing Laughing Laughing

Granny is a better story teller than I so someday she may explain for those who don't know where the shovel bit comes from.

Congratulations on the weight loss Imagine13. The items that you have eliminated from your diet are pretty much along the same line as what I have, other than I also cut out cheese, rice, and pasta, but I do eat grilled or baked white meat chicken. I had always prefered fried fish or seafood, so aquiring the taste for it grilled or baked has been quite a change for me. I tried some blackened swordfish for the first time at a restaurant in Virginia back in November that was awesome.

I had gradually gained a little more weight each year but was always pretty active physically, even walking about 4 miles a day. Because of a bad knee that began to give me trouble, I had to cut back on my walking eventually just about cutting it all together. I never had any BP problems, other than it used to be on the low side of the normal range. The Dr. kept telling me that if I were to lose weight that it would help with the knee. They said every 5 lbs. of weight I lost would be like taking 15 lbs. of pressure off of my knee. In September I went in for some bloodwork and when I got the results back it showed that my Cholesterol and Triglycerides were elevated. The Doc said it was time to get that reduced by either diet or I may have to go on meds to lower them.

I turned 52 back in October, have a grandbaby that just turned a year old, and I just decided that it was past time to start getting on track to a healthier lifestyle. I had a stress test done, a echocardiagram, and everything heart wise checked out OK. I'm 6'2" and when I began I was up to 314 lbs. Now 2-1/2 months later I am down to 279. My goal is to get myself down to around 225 or so and be able to maintain that weight to within 10 lbs or so. I travel a lot for work and it is sometimes pretty hard to find the healthier alternatives for places to eat on the road. I'm usually with 2 or 3 others and I really can't expect them to sacrifice anything to cater to my dietary needs. I try to make up for it whenever I'm home by sticking to my diet as closely as I can. My latest bloodwork came back significantly better and the knee is feeling a lot better too.

Good luck to anyone else that is, or will try, to start eating healthier. The only downside so far besides the cravings, is having to go out and buy new pants because the others won't stay up any longer. I think that's a fair tradeoff! The last time I went through the TSA line with no belt on I was hoping to avoid a wardrobe malfunction.

Congrats on the good work! I have had to deal with clothes as well. Just gave away a bunch of really nice stuff. Fortunately, I kept a lot of my old clothes from years ago in storage and have been pulling some of them out and wearing them. I always bought classic mens clothing, nothing too trendy so they are still wearable. I tried to wear my tux back in October and couldn't, the pants were waayyy too large and falling off and the coat swallowed me up. Not going to buy a new one until I get down another 60 pounds or so.

I had forgotten about my knee problems until you mentioned yours. About a year ago mine had gotten really bad and I thought I was going to have to get surgery on them. But as I have lost almost 70 pounds so far, they are almost completely pain free now and the exercising is strengthening the muscles around them too.
